LIFE Programme
Open-call snapshot checked 2026-04-18
The LIFE Programme is the European Union's dedicated funding instrument for environment and climate action, with a budget of around €5.4 billion for 2021-2027. It supports nature protection, the circular economy, climate action, and the clean energy transition.
What LIFE funds
LIFE is organised into four sub-programmes: nature and biodiversity; circular economy and quality of life; climate change mitigation and adaptation; and the clean energy transition. It funds practical projects that demonstrate, scale, or accelerate environmental and climate solutions.
Project types range from standard action projects to larger strategic projects that help member states implement environmental and climate policy.
Who is eligible
Public bodies, non-profits, and companies registered in the EU and other eligible countries can apply. LIFE is well suited to organisations that can deliver tangible environmental outcomes — including SMEs commercialising clean technology or circular-economy solutions.
Co-funding rates depend on the project type and sub-programme; many projects are co-funded up to around 60% of eligible costs.
Choosing LIFE over other programmes
LIFE is the right route when environmental or climate impact is the core purpose of the project, rather than a side benefit. Clean-tech companies pursuing first-of-a-kind industrial demonstration at large scale should also look at the Innovation Fund, and research-stage work points to Horizon Europe.

LIFE funds practical environment and climate projects — nature restoration, circular-economy solutions, climate adaptation, and clean energy uptake. It favours demonstrable, replicable results over early-stage research.
Can a private company apply to LIFE?
Yes. Companies, including SMEs, can apply, alongside public authorities and non-profit organisations. A clear, measurable environmental or climate outcome is essential.
How much does LIFE co-fund?
Co-funding rates vary by project type and sub-programme, but many LIFE projects are co-funded up to around 60% of eligible costs. The applicable rate is set in the call.
