EU grants for AI companies
Open-call snapshot checked 2026-04-18
AI companies in Europe can access EU grant funding mainly through Horizon Europe (for research and innovation), the Digital Europe Programme (for AI deployment and testing facilities), and the EIC Accelerator (for breakthrough single-company innovation).
Best-fit programmes
These are the EU programmes most relevant to AI companies. Each guide explains eligibility, funding rates, and the calls open now.
Where AI funding sits
EU funding for artificial intelligence is split by maturity. Research and technology development — new models, methods, and applied AI in collaborative projects — is funded by Horizon Europe, especially its digital and industry cluster. Deployment — testing and experimentation facilities, data spaces, and putting trustworthy AI into wide use — is funded by the Digital Europe Programme.
A startup with a breakthrough AI product and a route to market should also look at the EIC Accelerator, which funds single companies rather than consortia.
What evaluators look for
AI proposals are strongest when they go beyond a model and show a concrete application, a credible data strategy, and a clear position on trustworthy and lawful AI. Generic 'we use AI' framing scores poorly; a specific problem, sector, and measurable outcome scores well.
Because AI calls attract heavy competition, the fit between the project and the exact call topic matters as much as the technology itself.
Choosing the right route
If the work is genuinely new and collaborative, Horizon Europe fits. If it is about deploying proven AI at scale, Digital Europe fits. If a single company has a market-creating innovation, the EIC Accelerator fits. Many AI companies qualify for more than one — the question is which to target first, and a grant specialist can help sequence them.

Frequently asked questions
Can an AI startup get EU grant funding?
Yes. AI startups are eligible across Horizon Europe, the Digital Europe Programme, and the EIC Accelerator. The right programme depends on whether the work is research, deployment, or single-company innovation, and on whether the company has consortium partners.
Do I need partners to get AI funding?
For most Horizon Europe and Digital Europe calls, yes — a consortium across several countries. The EIC Accelerator is the main exception: it funds a single company, with no consortium required.
Does the EU fund generative AI?
Generative and foundation-model work can be eligible where it fits a call topic — for example trustworthy AI, language technology, or sector applications. The proposal still has to match the specific scope and outcomes the call asks for.
